HISTORY OF KARUR
TAMIL NADU, INDIA
Karur is one of the oldest towns in Tamil Nadu and has played a very significant role in the history and culture of the Tamils.It was called KARUVOOR or VANJI during Sangam days.Karur is built on the banks of River Amaravathi which was called Aanporinai during the Sangam days.After the early Cheras, Karur was conquered and ruled by Pandiyas followed by Pallavas and later Cholas. Karur was under the rule of Cholas for long time. Later the Naickers followed by Tipu Sultan also ruled Karur. The British added Karur to their possessions after desroying the Karur Fort during their war against Tipu sultan in 1783. There is a memorial at RAYANUR near Karur for the warriors who lost their lives in the fight against British in the Anglo - Mysore Wars.
Karur is the administrative Headquarters of Karur District in the South Indian State of Tamil Nadu. The town is administered by a Municipality established in 1874 as per the Municipal Corporation Act.
Karur is a major Textile centre and generates around Rs.6,000 crores in foreign exchange through direct and indirect exports.Karur is hub for Bus body buildings and also home to Chettinadu Cements, TNPL, and EID Parry. HDPE mono filament yarn and its associated products of Mosquito and Fishing nets are manufactured in Karur.
Karur is the home city of India's Oldest Private Scheduled Banks, KARUR VYSYA BANK and LAKSHMI VILAS BANK.

Rotary Club of Karur was chartered on 19.10.1955 with the leading Industrialist of Coimbatore Late.L.G.Varadharajan as President and Late. N.Vedanthachari, Advocate who brought Naradha Gana Saba to Karur to promote arts and culture as Secretary.
Honble.Former Chief Minister. C.N. Annadurai, Sir C.P.Ramasamy Iyer, Honble. Justice. P.S.Kailasam, Honble. Justice. S.Natarajan, Honble.Justice.V.Rama Subramaniyan, Kaviarasu Kannadhasan, PRIP Rtn.K.R.Ravindran [Sri Lanka ], Sri.T.D.Sundararaj, I.A.S, Sri. C.Ramachandran I.A.S, Sri S.Iyar I.A.S , Sri.T.S.Panchapakesan, I.P.S, and as like so many VIPs were participated as a chief guest in Installation ceremonies and other programs in Rotary Club of Karur.
Rotary Club of Karur has grown manifolds in the last 65 years with current membership over 365 leading business and professional people of Karur. Rotary Club of Karur is second largest Club in India. Rotary Club of Karur is generously contributed USD 3,78,786/-
[ INR 2,84,08,950/- { 1$ = 75 INR} ] to The Rotary Foundation so far. This Club having 15 Major Donors [2 Level 3, 2 Level 2 and 11 Level 1 ] 140 PHF and 20 MPHF members at present.
Rotary Club of Karur runs a Medical Centre is aided with VNC Group of Companies ,Karur, to provide free medical treatment about 70 to 90 poor and downtrodden people every day through the Rotary Medical Centre.
Rotary Club of Karur runs a Mobile Clinic by daily camp in remote villeges under the CSR fund from VKA Polymers,Karur to provide free medical consultation and treatments abour 45 to 60 poor and downtrodden people every day by this Mobile Clinc.
Rotary Club of Karur runs a Micro Credit Centre by the GG funds of INR 56,00,000/- to help the poor people who are in need to small loans to run their business for earning their daily livelihood for the last 12 years. The success rate of this initiative is almost 100 % in repayments from the borrowers.
Rotary Club of Karur has deticated two members from the Club to Rotary International,the one is Rtn.C.BASKER as District Governor [2000-01] he was Rotary International Director for Zone V from India for the period of 2017-'19 and the another is Rtn.S.RAJENDRAN as District Governor [ 2011-12] he was Assiatant Rotary Regional Co ordinatore for Zone V -A for the period of 2017-'19.
Rotary Club of Karur has sponsored Four New Rotary Clubs named as Rotary Club of Karur Texcity, and Rotary Club of Pallapatti, Rotary Club of Karur Amaravathi, Rotary Club of Karur Cheran and further sponsored Eight Rotaract Clubs, Five Rotary Community Corps [Rural], and Seven Interact Clubs in Karur District.
Rotary Club of Karur is doing numerous community service projects and also concentrates on the youth development programs in every year under the dynamic leadership respective Presidents and their team of the Rotary club.
Royary Club of Karur have a Club House , A/c Rotary Hall and Walking track all built in their own land site area about 14 acres in total worth of Rs. 40 Crores, it was opened by Hon'ble Rtn. V.Senthil Balaji [ Minister to Transports,Govt. of Tamilnadu ] and Rtn.P.T.Prabhakar, [ Rotary International Director ] respectively on 22.02.2015 in the presence of Rtn.PDG. C.Basker.
